Japan Suspends Whaling Season

Whale conservation groups have a victory for now. Japan has announced that they will temporarily suspend the annual whale hunt in the seas of the Antarctic this season, citing the anti-whaling group Sea Shepard as one of the reasons.

Hirosh Kawamura, an official at the Japanese Ministry of Fisheries said, “We have experienced the dangerous attacks from them, it might take the life of crews,” he said. “Considering the safety as the first priority, we decided to halt the whaling temporarily.”

Japan continues to annually hunt whales in the Antarctic, despite the worldwide moratorium on whaling. Japan harvests whales for human consumption using a loophole that states a country may whale legally if its for the purpose of scientific research.

Ocean Champions, Part One

These days, Sea Shepherd is getting a lot of press.  Whale Wars, a cable TV show, has turned Paul Watson into the oceanic Superman.  But while he’s basking in the limelight, there are many other champions of the oceans, people who have been working quietly outside of the limelight.  These heroes have gone largely unsung.  Protect The Ocean is pleased to bring some of them to your attention here.  If it’s well-received, other Parts will follow.

Proof that Japanese Intentionally Rammed the Ady Gil

The video below provides clear proof that the Ady Gil was run over by intent.  

Right now Pete Bethune, the captain of that vessel, a New Zealand citizen, is being held by the Japanese government, under trial for boarding the vessel to demand that the captain pay for the ship and answer to charges against him.  Clearly the Ady Gil’s captain was no threat with so many Japanese crew on board.  Yet they took him prisoner and sailed back to Japan with him.
