Corexit’s Foul Stench

We have been reporting (and reporting about) the dangers of Corexit since the beginning of its use in the BP Gulf Disaster. Amongst things that we at Protect The Ocean have noticed is that Corexit is detectable in significant concentrations within shoreline waters days ahead of the arrival of the oil itself, and in beach waters that show no sign of oil contamination. Corexit is lethal to fish fry within 96 hours (and the stuff has been in there a lot longer than 96 hours) at just 2.6 ppm, that’s a pretty serious concentration! The fact is that far lower concentrations have proven lethal on fish fry when the duration went to 2 weeks.

A local Channel 5 news station at the Gulf did some independent testing. They took samples of water that children were playing in, and found Corexit solvents in concentrations ranging from 16 ppm to well over 200 ppm. Needless to say, I wouldn’t want anything in (or from) those waters if it could be helped. There’s no doubt that employing Corexit to bury the oil beneath the surface (where they wouldn’t be forced to pay for cleaning it up) was their contingency plan in case of major catastrophic leak. There’s little doubt that they realized the potential ramifications of infusing the stuff at 133+ atmospheres of pressure in cold water. [Read more...]

Gulf Oil Spill: We Must Report an Environmental EMERGENCY!

As most know by now, BP has been spraying a solvent called Corexit 9500 onto the ocean’s waters.  By now you probably also know that many question the wisdom of this, and are concerned about the toxicity of that solvent.  Well they should be, since it’s 3-4 times more toxic than the oil itself, makes the oil more effectively toxic by causing the oil to have a larger area exposed to ocean water, and because in our opinion IT IS ILLEGAL TO USE IT AS IT HAS BEEN EMPLOYED UNDERWATER.

This chemical was only ever approved for coastal clean-up.  It was not tested, nor approved, for release into the open ocean some 50 miles from shore and nearly a mile down beneath the surface.  What is this, then, that they’ve reportedly poured out 400,000 gallons of it already, and industry sources indicate the EPA has purchased an additional 800,000 gallons to continue polluting our oceans with?  The simple fact is that at least some of that is a federal crime, and if we witness it, we are obligated to report it!

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): [Read more...]

Gulf Oil Spill: BP Intentionally Commiting Felonies Under EPA’s Nose?

The dumping of solvents into the ocean is a federal offense.  It’s likely also against state laws.  If anyone else was to dump just a barrel or two of noxious solvents into the Gulf, they’d be led off in handcuffs.  So why is are the EPA and Coast Guard letting them get away with pouring so many thousands of gallons of it every day?

Yesterday, BP announced that they are resuming injecting dispersing solvents into the oil stream in the depths of this disaster.  They still have not satisfied ANY of the inquiries regarding toxicity.  They have yet to explain why they are not utilizing Dispersit, which is a water-based alternative with far lower toxicity.  They have yet to justify trying to “bury” their financial responsibility by “dispersing” the toxic oil throughout the ocean waters, instead of letting it come to shore where it can THEN be cleaned up.  But they’re going to go back to using Exxon’s 9500, which we KNOW is highly toxic and noxious.  9500 causes damage to a human’s Central Nervous System (amongst the many effects of the oil-based solvent.)  Why are we allowing them to continue to use this stuff?  Just because some bureaucrat approved it two decades ago?!
